Leadership at New Pathways for Youth

Leadership plays a huge role at New Pathways for Youth. All members of their organization have a role in leadership, including the kids. Many of the employees are in charge of different programs to include the program that I am apart of. For example, my supervisor oversee's all of the mentoring programs, manages the grant reporting, and oversee's the evaluation of all programs. The pals program coordinator is in charge of overseeing each volunteer match. I am also allowed to utilize my leadership skills. Recently, I was asked to attend the pals camp, where I was able to coordinate the meal prep and eating schedule.

All of the staff have a passion for guiding the matches and all of the volunteers instead of making decisions for them. For example, Shae and I attended a bullying workshop and instead of telling the kids how to handle bullying, they asked the kids how they would stop bullying. They also asked the kids how others feel when they are bullied, and to make their own public service announcements on how to prevent bullying. The kids are very involved with leadership, and often take charge of their given tasks even when they are not called upon. While New Pathways for Youth has many leadership programs, their main focus is teamwork. Lastly, they let others take leadership roles, and are not afraid to admit when someone else can do a job more efficiently.

  1. Hi, Fatemah
I think that is very important ground work for leadership to begin from when we talk about the youth leadership. We need to invest leadership spirit in young people from the early childhood education so that they can grow with it as part of their cultures. I love what you are doing that is very credible effort to train our kids' mind for peace. All the related issues of violence in our society today affecting most communities across the nation is because there are no proper effective leadership structures at home, whether by single parent or double parents. Our father died when I was seven years old and we were raise by our mother who struggled so much just to provide food on the table, keep us save, taught us to be hard workers, to be responsible people, and respect ourselves and others would do the same to us. But most importantly, she said something to us which I never forget that " If you like to do bad things to others or living things around you one day, it will come back to you." We need to raise our kids with a good discipline of human harmony spirituality to shape their lives fruitfully to avoid violent behaviors. Therefore, early education is better seed to life. Thanks

  2. Fatemah, your internship sounds really interesting and definitely sounds like you're being a leader for these kids. I'm sure attending the bullying workshop really helped you understand how to be an example for kids who are dealing with bullying. Great work!
